Friend or foe up ahead? A bunch of crazies or just a peaceful group on a field trip? When traveling and exploring, do you go prepared? Do you perform a threat assessment for destinations beforehand? Do you have a plan when things turn bad? Do you understand how to read the environment, atmosphere, body language and group dynamics?
What do you have to protect yourself? Skills? Tools? Speed, strength and stamina? Strategy and Tactics to put it all together and carry out effective solutions? Where do you excel and where do you need to improve?
If you haven't started to get familiar with any of the above, there’s no time like the present. As the saying goes: it’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.
For effective self-protection, you don’t always have to be an expert (unless your aim is mastery training). However, it would be wise to acquire and sustain an effective level and range of survival skill (and, of course, tools).
In the meantime, connect yourself with good people already squared away.
